Grid Compliance Studies

The development of modern energy facilities requires more than a physical grid connection. To obtain the necessary approvals from the grid or transmission company, the facility must be documented in accordance with the applicable grid connection requirements. The facility must be “grid compliant” – meaning that it must be able to document that it fulfils the technical requirements for interaction with the power grid. For this purpose, simulation models and studies are carried out using relevant software such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, and PSSE.

For PV plants, wind farms, BESS facilities, PtX facilities, data centres and hybrid facilities, grid compliance is a central part of project development. Requirements typically cover dynamic performance, voltage and frequency regulation, fault ride-through, reactive power control, power quality and the interaction with the surrounding power grid.

L-Engineering specialises in carrying out the necessary technical studies and delivering the documentation required by grid and transmission companies to issue the grid connection permissions EON (Energisation Operational Notification), ION (Interim Operational Notification) and FON (Final Operational Notification).

Our services include:
  • Pre-compliance studies, including assessment of P/Q and U/Q capability, transformer dimensioning and energisation conditions.
  • Grid compliance studies in accordance with RfG, NC DC, and other applicable grid codes.
  • Development and validation of static, dynamic, harmonic and transient simulation models.
  • Static, dynamic (RMS) and transient (EMT) simulations and studies.
  • Harmonic analyses and assessment of power quality.
  • Assessment of reactive power control, fault ride-through and dynamic performance.
  • Technical documentation for grid and transmission companies.
  • Execution of compliance testing and compliance simulations.

If the analyses show that a facility does not fully meet the grid requirements, we help identify and develop the necessary technical solutions. This may include studies of reactive compensation, harmonic filtering, control strategies and other mitigating measures that contribute to documenting the facility as grid compliant.

We work for facility owners, project developers, EPCs, EPC-Ms and grid companies and support projects from the early development phases through to final grid connection approval. Our goal is to reduce approval risk, create a solid technical documentation basis and help projects achieve grid connection as efficiently as possible.
